Thousands camp out at Hodag Country Fest

RHINELANDER (WAOW) - Thousands of campers have claimed a spot at the Hodag Country Music Festival.

Organizers say many people started setting up last Saturday.

There are 5,000 campsites available and organizers say there are still a few open.

Many of the campers decorate their territory with a theme. They say camping out there is a tradition.

"We've got all our friends, they camp with us. They've been with us all those years," said Keith Maertz of Birnamwood. "We came up here on Tuesday this year. It takes us a full day to get all set up with the bar, the saddles, and everything."

"This bus is the 'Hodag Hilton', built in 1991, it's got 370,000 miles on it, used to haul children, now hauls drunk people," said Phil Meyer of the Town of Wausau.

Organizers say most campers will pack up and head out Monday.
