Brewers blow big lead, lose to Cardinals

The Brewers used two big innings to take an early 6-0 lead, but the Cardinals scored seven straight runs and Matt Holiday hit the game-winning home run in the top of the ninth, as the Cardinals beat the Brewers 7-6 in a pivotal match-up at Miller Park Friday night.

Milwaukee scored three runs in the first inning, followed by three more in the second. In the first, Khris Davis highlighted the scoring with a two-run double. In the second, Scooter Gennett did a majority of the damage with a two-run triple.

Yovani Gallardo, who has struggled against St. Louis in his career, looked good early on, allowing two runs through the first five innings.

But, the Cardinals pulled themselves back into the game, tying the game at 6-6 after a four run sixth.

In the top of the ninth, Matt Holliday tallied his third hit of the game, this one the biggest of the game: a solo home run to give the Cardinals the lead for the good in the 9th.

Aramis Ramirez led off the bottom of the 9th with a leadoff single, but Ryan Braun and Khris Davis both struck out, and Rickie Weeks grounded out to end the game.

The six run lead is the Brewers biggest blown lead of the season. Milwaukee has now lost 10 out of its last 11 games, and its lead over St. Louis in the NL Central is now down to just one game.

Game two of the crucial series is Saturday at 3:10 p.m.
