Rhinelander students host Hodag campers for fundraiser

Rhinelander High School students are opening their school's doors to Hodag Country Fest campers.

They're hosting their 8th Annual Hodag Breakfast and Showers fundraiser.

Throughout the weekend, students host breakfast in the cafeteria and campers can shower in the locker rooms.

"It shows people that we are active in the community as well as our school and shows that we care what happens in our city," said Gunnar Millot, a Rhinelander High School sophomore.

All the stations are manned by Rhinelander High School students coming in on their off-time during the summer. Organizers say about 40 students come in over the weekend to make sure the event runs smoothly.

"Country Festers that wouldn't normally come to a high school environment get to see a better perception of high schoolers than they would normally see," said Amelia Fehlan, a Rhinelander High School junior.

Organizers say about 100 people come each day and many return year after year.

Hodaggers say it's a good alternate to long shower lines at the campgrounds.

"It's pretty nice," said Joe Franko of Appleton. "It's only two dollars more to come here and shower, but the showers are longer and they're more personal."

Event leaders say money raised goes toward students' transportation costs for state tournaments and workshops.

But students say they often take away more from hosting the fundraiser.

"Good to know other people joining these clubs, so it's a great 'getting to know you' activity for the new members," said Fehlan. "I feel like it's a great bonding experience before the school year begins."

Organizers say students raised about $1,600 last year.

They say their goal is to make $2,000 this year.
