Merrill fire leaves $2 million in damages

Damage to a Lincoln County business is estimated to be $2 million after an overnight fire.

Merrill Fire Department officials say they were dispatched to Northern Wire LLC around 1:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of smoke coming from the roof.

Officials say they found fire roaring through the metal plating area of the factory.

Because of unknown chemicals and the fire in the planting area of the factory, the Wausau Fire Department Hazardous Material Team was put on standby.

Merrill received assistance from Corning Fire Department, Town of Maine Fire Department, Wausau Fire Department, Town of Texas Fire Department, Tomahawk EMS, and Pine River Fire Department.

Officials say the fire is still under investigation but appears to be electrical in nature.

No injuries were reported.
