UPDATE: Chippewa Falls School District votes to extend school days

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Chippewa Falls School District has voted to add minutes to the school day to prevent snow days from extending the school year. The board voted Thursday night.

Two minutes will be added to the elementary school day, eight minutes added to middle school and seven minutes added to the high school. The board decided not to have students attend school on Good Friday, which was one option they were considering.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A local school district is asking what can be done to keep kids from needing to be stuck in school during the summer. Chippewa Falls canceled classes 7 times this past winter, but only had two snow days set aside. As a result, a committee was formed to figure out a way around adding on days at the end of the school year.

Its hard to think snow when the weather outside looks more like sunshine and summertime. But students in Chippewa Falls spent an entire extra week in hallways and classrooms in June thanks to a brutal winter. That has the school board wondering what it can do to prevent the same situation this coming year.

"We have looked at a couple of different options. One of the options is Good Friday as a potential makeup day. We're looking at that as a potential makeup day if we don't have enough cushion," said Michelle Golden, Chippewa Falls School District Public Relations Director.

Another option being recommended by the committee is to add about 5 minutes to the school day each morning, and three more every afternoon.

"There is minimal to no financial impact to adding minutes to the school day, because the minutes that we're adding to the school day are within the amount of hours that staff are expected to be at school," Golden said.

By the end of the year, those minutes will add up to about three days worth of additional schooling. But with her son Paxton by her side, Crystal Brown wonders how much is too much.

"I feel like the days are already pretty long for kids. I feel like they're already having a hard time being there that long. So it might not be a great idea to add on and have them spend even more time sitting in school," said Crystal Brown of Chippewa Falls.

Yet she knows Mother Nature cares little about classrooms.

"We've had a few winters that have been long and brutal. So I fell like they should take some sort of action to prevent kids from having to stay in school so long into the summer," added Brown.

School board members will hear from the committee when they meet Thursday night at 7 p.m.
