Homicide charge filed in 2012 deadly crash

MADISON (WKOW) -- Charges are filed in a deadly crash in Dane County two years ago.

50-year-old Gary Lammert of Anaconda, Montana faces a felony charge of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.

Lammert is charged in the crash that killed 22-year-old Katie Binning of Madison. The student art teacher was on Highway 14 and turning into Wisconsin Heights High School on May 30, 2012 when her car was rear-ended by a semi, sending it into an oncoming van.

Lammert made his initial appearance in Dane County Court on Thursday, where he received a copy of the criminal complaint and waived its reading. As part of his bond, Lammert cannot drive a commercial motor vehicle.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has been working to improve the safety of that stretch of Highway 14. Construction began last week on a new turn lane and making the school's entrance and exit into one access point.
