Portage County future farmers show off livestock

At fairs throughout the state this summer you'll find future farmers prepping livestock for show and sale.

The barns at the Portage County Fair in Amherst are packed with young farmers doing just that.

"It is just a great family project. They learn so much," said Lissa Forth, animal superintendent for the fair. "They learn life skills that they aren't going to learn anywhere else. Responsibility, how to speak to people because they have to go out and get bidder slips for the sale, what's a sick animal, what's a healthy animal."

They learn it through months of hands on preparation.

"It takes all the months of breaking him, training him, getting him feed and making sure you know everything about him for showmanship," said Breanna Wenter of Rosholt.

Fair leaders expect about 15,000 people to come to the fair this weekend to enjoy carnival food and rides.

But the future farmers will spend most of the time in the barns because there's a lot of work to do.

"You have to feed them, water them, give them hay, walk them around, wash them for the show," said Sarah Turner of Amherst.

They don't see it as a chore.

"It's fun. All for the experience and to show people people that are not farmers that you can have fun," said Mallory Rakowski of Rosholt.

The four day fair runs through Sunday.
