BMX bikers shred at X-Fest in Weston

WESTON (WAOW) -- People in Weston looking for an adrenaline rush got all they could handle Friday.

BMX bikers hit the skate park for X-Fest, a celebration of extreme sports.

It was also a learning experience for the athletes.

The North Central Wisconsin Fellowship of Christian Athletes brought in a team of bikers from Indiana called Wonder Wheels.

They taught classes and held competitions all day for riders of every level.

Organizers say X-Fest is a way to promote a positive environment for the sports that sometimes get a bad rap.

"This is what they want to do," said Jeff Tarras, the event's organizer. "They aren't into soccer, football, basketball, whatever it is. They're into skateboarding. They're into BMX and I just saw this through Fellowship of Christian Athletes as an opportunity to encourage them."

Organizers say about 50 athletes came out for the event.

X-Fest can be enjoyed even by people who have never been on a BMX bike before.

Organizers say extreme sports make for great spectating.

They encourage families to head on down to Kennedy Park to check out some of the amazing athletes.

The skateboarders will get their turn in the skate park bowls starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
