Dogs compete for best in show in Rothschild

ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) -- Hundreds of dogs competed Saturday in the Paper Cities Kennel Club Dog Show at the Patriot Center in Rothschild.

Organizers say judges will look at just under 500 dogs through the weekend.

About 150 different breeds will be judged on several different qualities like size and gait.

Organizers say dogs can be trained for these shows up to a point, but it helps if they're just naturals.

"You don't want the dog to sit when the judge is going over the dog," said Marvin Strassburger, co-chairman of the show. "You want it to stand there because they have to look at the teeth. In some breeds they have to count the number of teeth. They will open a dog's mouth wide open and count and make sure it has all its teeth."

The competition will continue Sunday from 8:30 to 4.
