Historic bell rung in Birnamwood dedication ceremony

BIRNAMWOOD (WAOW) -- A piece of Birnamwood history was returned to the village as part of a dedication ceremony Saturday afternoon.

A bell that dates back to 1880 was rung during the grand opening of Birnamwood's new community center.

Community members say the bell stood in front of Birnamwood High School until the 1970s when the school closed.

A teacher from the school then kept it at her house in Antigo.

It exchanged hands a couple more times, but community members say now it's back where it belongs.

"That bell represents the heart and the beat of this community," said Tom Brounacker, the ceremony's officiator. "That was what called me and hundreds and hundreds of children to school at 8:15."

About 100 people came to the ceremony.
