Woodchucks use 8th inning to top Rafters

The Wisconsin Woodchucks used a three-run 8th inning to beat the rival Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 5-4 Saturday night at Witter Field.

Brendon Hayden gave the Chucks a 2-0 lead in the first inning with his eighth home run of the season.

The Rafters got runs in the third and seventh innings to tie the game at two heading into the eighth. A two-run single from Ryan Howard and an RBI groundout from Eric Garza gave the Woodchucks a 5-2 lead.

Wisconsin Rapids rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Northwoods League all-star Max Ising recorded his eleventh save of the season and the Chucks held on for the one-run road victory.

The Woodchucks and Rafters will meet again on Sunday for the second game of the home-and-home series. First pitch at Athletic Park is slated for 5:05 p.m.
