CENTRAL WISCONSIN AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN SEARCHES FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR 2014 ANNUAL RACE FOR THE CURE
Each year, the Central Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure hosts the annual Race for the Cure in downtown Wausau. This year the race will be held on August 10, 2014. One of the most critical groups of people needed to participate each year are the volunteers. “We are looking for more than 350 volunteers for this year’s race,” said Amanda Patterson, Race for the Cure Chairperson for the Central Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen. “Last year we had almost that many show up on race day. It was great! “The Race provides many opportunities for people to volunteer,” said Michelle Hauer, Central Wisconsin Race for the Cure Volunteer Chair. “We need volunteers for our registration area and set up the week before the Race. On Race day, we need people to cheer our runners and walkers at the finish line, staff water stations, monitor the course, and guide people to local and national sponsor tents throughout Race morning.” People interested in volunteering for the August 10th race can complete a registration form through the United Way’s online volunteer registration. The site lists the opportunities and the number of volunteers Komen needs at each station. You can access the United Way site through the Komen Central Wisconsin website at http://komencentralwisconsin.org/komen-central-wisconsin-race-for-the-cure-volunteers/. Volunteer shifts can range from two hours to six hours depending on how long a person wants to be involved. The Race festivities usually conclude early in the afternoon. There are also volunteer opportunities that occur before Race day; these will start on Thursday, August 7. “We are so thankful for people who want to volunteer for our race,” said Patterson. “We know that the race would not happen without the efforts of many of our dedicated volunteers.”
“Right now, we need volunteers in all areas,” said Hauer. “This year we worked to structure volunteer opportunities so that our volunteers can help and still participate in the Race if they want to do so. All our volunteers will receive specific instructions via e-mail. They will also receive a free t-shirt that is ONLY available to volunteers. We hope that each volunteer feels the satisfaction of knowing they are helping to fund local programs dedicated to finding the cure and offering support for men and women fighting breast cancer”, Hauer said.
Volunteers who wish to participate in the race on Sunday are encouraged to sign up for Thursday through Saturday positions. There are a few set-up positions that are needed the morning of the race as well.
