State Park Speedway: Mackesy looks to win fourth Detjens Memorial

Saturday night, State Park Speedway hosts it's biggest race of the summer; the 34th annual running of the Detjens Memorial. The event is put on to honor the late Larry Detjens, one of the greats in short track racing history.

The 125 lap super late model feature is one of the most well known events in short track racing. Drivers say that the race is like their version of the Daytona 500 because of the history and the high level of racing.

Mark Mackesy is one of only three drivers to win the race three times and on Saturday night, he could become the first to take the Detjens checkered flag for the fourth time.

"To win it is difficult. It took me nine or ten years to win the first one," said Mackesy. "Now that it's ramped up to 125 laps, you have to last that whole race, have no issues, no problems. Then you've got to beat all the guys that are coming in. I mean there's some big hitters coming in, you know, Wimmer, Sauter, the Weinkauf's are coming down. You name it, they're coming here this weekend. It's a tough race and to win it a fourth time would be just magnificent."

The weekend full of racing kicks off Friday evening. The racing on Saturday starts at 6:00 p.m. with five support divisions to proceed the Auto Select Detjens Memorial 125, presented by Newsline 9.
