Wausau cheese curd stand brings tradition to Wisconsin Valley Fair

WAUSAU (WAOW) - There are dozens of food vendors at the Wisconsin Valley Fair that come back year after year, but one has been coming back for more than 40 years.

The Wausau Breakfast Optimist Club has lines wrapped down this pathway for their cheese curds.

“This is a big draw, this is probably the number one," said Mark Feldman of De Forest.

“A lot of the old timers come back and talk about 20 or 30 years ago," said Shawn Peterson of the optimist club.

Some of them are still at the stand.

“Our members would walk up and down the midway and give them away because no one had heard of them," said John Kordus of the optimist club.

Now, the food stand has become a family tradition.

“It's something they did as a kid and now they bring their kids and it's a really good feeling," said Peterson.

“I have to get at least five orders before I can leave,” said Feldman.

With those cheese curds comes a side of banter between the cooks.

“That's what makes it fun,” said Kordus. “That's why we have a good time here and we like to do it to our new members to get them broken in."

“We do it for the kids," said Peterson.

The club raises money for scholarships for students in Marathon County.

“It's a great service to the community and it's always fun to see old faces come back year after year," said Peterson.
