Wausau West holds Warrior Hoops Camp

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- With football and baseball in full swing, basketball season may seem miles away. But at Wausau West this week, the sport took center stage.

The school is holding its annual Warrior Hoops Camp, which is led by Wausau West head varsity basketball coach Nate Lemmens.

The camp is open to players in grade levels 4-K through 9th grade, and focuses on the development of younger players.

Lemmens told Newsline 9 the main focus is teaching these young athletes the fundamentals of the game of basketball, while also developing life skills along the way.

"I don't think it's just basketball that we're teaching," he said. "We teach these kids values, teamwork and responsibility.

"It's a part of our community," he added. "Keeping these kids in our community means something to me, and I think it's important for West to develop its youth."

Some of Lemmens' assistants were on hand to assist with the camp, as were some of his varsity players.

"They know what's expected," Lemmens said. "So it's good for them to be able to relate to the kids.

"And, the kids enjoy seeing them," he added. "They can kind of relate to them, so this winter they can say, 'Hey, you know, I gave Taylor a high five,' and I think that's important."
