Police: Man found dead in river crash was drunk

SCHOFIELD (WAOW) – The 27-year-old Wausau man found dead inside a sports utility vehicle that plunged into the Eau Claire River in June was legally intoxicated, Everest Metro Police said Tuesday.

Toxicology reports indicate that Matthew Chaignot's blood-alcohol level during the early morning June 17 crash was 0.16 percent, double the legal limit to drive, Capt. Clayton Schulz said.

Chaignot drowned after his SUV left one of Schofield's busiest streets and went into the water near a dam.

The SUV was submerged in the river and was not found until a bicyclist noticed tracks in a grassy area leading into the river, investigated closer and saw the vehicle through the murky water.

Both speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash,” Schulz said in a statement Tuesday.
