Judge: Euthanize Wausau pit bull

WAUSAU (WAOW) – A Marathon County judge has ordered that a pit bull that attacked a Wausau woman in June and killed her Chihuahua be euthanized as a vicious dog, police said Wednesday.

The pit bull was put down late Wednesday afternoon at a veterinarian's office, the agency said.

Police petitioned Marathon County Circuit Judge Greg Grau after the owner of the pit bull, a Wausau woman, refused to euthanize it, authorities said.

Cindy Ryder, 56, was attacked by the pit bull June 19 as she walked in the 900 block of Washington Street near downtown with her six-year-old Chihuahua, Bartok, on a leash. .

I thought the damn dog was going to kill me,” Ryder said the next day. “I grabbed the collar but it was too late. My dog was already dying.”

The female pit bull came running out of a home and went after the smaller dog, police said. The cream-colored Chihuahua was killed in the attack.

Ryder suffered numerous abrasions, bites, punctures and cuts as she tried to rescue the smaller dog and ended up on the ground with the pit bull.

Police said the pit bull was quarantined after the attack and did not have rabies.

The 32-year-old owner of the pit bull got city citations for letting a dog run loose, failure to obtain a license and failure to obtain rabies vaccination, police said.
