Countdown to Kickoff: Wausau East

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- More change is in store this season for the Wausau East football team.

The Lumberjacks have their second head coach in as many years, with former Merrill coach Tom Tourtillott set to take over the program.

Tourtillott coached for seven seasons in Merrill, turning the Bluejays program into a state championship contender.

"It all starts with doing the little things right," he said. "You know, focusing on the details."

As a former assistant at Rice Like, Tourtillott believes that having a staff that is on the same page is key.

"(I need to) have a coaching staff that buys into what we're doing," he told Newsline 9. "We have a set plan on how to do things."

And there's no such thing as too much attention to detail.

"I'm a firm believer that there is no detail that is too small, and we're making sure that we're going to be fundamentally sound," he added.

For the players, especially upperclassmen, adjusting to yet another head coach will be difficult. But this Wausau East team wants to win now.

"Every year is a new year," senior offensive lineman Alex Stine said. "I really like the team we have. We have high expectations and we really want to do the best we can.

"We'll work hard and see what we can do this year," he concluded.

The high school football season begins August 22.
