Packers safety Richardson stealing the show in training camp

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WAOW) -- With players like Morgan Burnett, Micah Hyde and rookie Ha Ha Clinton Dix on the Packers roster, it wouldn't appear there's much room for surprise contenders at the safety position.

But don't tell that to Sean Richardson.

"(He's) had a hell of a training camp," Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. "I'm impressed with him both defensively and on special teams, Sean's done a lot of good things."

Richardson, who suffered a neck injury in 2012, was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in that same year.

After missing most of the 2012 season, he returned to become a key special teams contributor for Green Bay last season.

This year, he's not content with being a specialist. Richardson is gunning for a starting safety spot - a tough task with the depth the Packers have at that position.

"I've been studying myself and studying a lot of other players in my position," Richardson said. "Just grabbing information from all aspects and trying to make myself a better player all around."

The Packers open their preseason Saturday in Tennessee against the Titans. You can catch the game here on Newsline 9. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. after Newsline 9 at 6. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
