School supplies collected for Portage Co. students

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - School supplies were gathered in Portage County to help students in need.

Project Fresh Start, United Way of Portage County's annual school supply drive, is collecting tools such as pencils, notebooks and markers.

Organizers are collecting donations at Ben Franklin Junior High School in Stevens Point Tuesday and Wednesday.

Organizers say the goodies go to nearly 1,300 students in the Stevens Point area.

"There are many low income families in Stevens Point and surrounding area that could really use school supplies because they can't afford it," said Project Fresh State coordinator Kelly Skeels. "So through the United Way, we collect all the school supplies."

Organizers will sort through the supplies Thursday and Friday.

On Saturday, families who qualify can pick up the donations at Ben Franklin Junior High School.
