WAUSAU (WAOW) -- No such thing as a free lunch? That's about to change at five Wausau elementary schools.
A federally-funded program will give free breakfasts and lunches to all students at the schools because of high poverty rates.
Those schools are Grant, G.D. Jones, Hawthorn Hills, Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson.
The schools will be some of the first in the state in the new national program.
"This is a great opportunity for our school district, for our students," said Roxi Sladek, the Wausau school district's food nutrition services director. "It allows our students to be consistently well-nourished each and every day. It allows them to be ready to learn."
District leaders say the free lunches start this year and will be in place for the next four school years.
