A big name retailer has its eyes on a spot in Wausau, according to city council members.
The new store could be built on Stewart Avenue across from Menard's, but the developer and city officials aren't saying what that big name store is quite yet.
At a committee meeting Tuesday night, Councilman David Oberbeck said a big box retailer and possibly a restaurant could soon be occupying that space.
"This business will draw regionally, so that may be a good thing and the location is prime, so I think it's welcomed development on the West Side," said Oberbeck.
Real estate developer Ghidorzi Companies applied to re-zone the area, allowing for retail buildings to be larger than 7,000 square feet.
Ghidorzi's development plans show the potential stores could be about 50,000 square feet.
"The opportunity we have in front of us is we are working with two retailers both are which over the 7,000 square feet," said Chris Ghidorzi with Ghidorzi Companies.
Tuesday night, Wausau's Plan Commission approved Ghidorzi's request.
Their decision now goes to city council for a vote in September.
Some work has already started on the land with heavy machinery digging and clearing brush.
Newsline 9 reached out the Ghidorzi representative for further information after the meeting.
He said no comment.
City leaders say they think people will be surprised and interested in the new store.
