WAUSAU (WAOW)--A Michigan man sits in the Marathon County Jail after prosecutors charged him with breaking into Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel's home and stealing his truck.
Jason Warner, 39, faces 19-years behind bars and thousands of dollars in fines if convicted on the felony and misdemeanor charges.
The Marathon County Sheriff's Department says the break-in happened Tuesday at Hardel's home in the Town of Maine.
Investigators say they put out an alert about the missing truck and an unfamiliar car left behind in Hardel's yard.
Later that day a report came in from Jackson County about a man walking along I-94.
Detectives say officers from the State Patrol picked up Warner who had been reported missing and endangered by family in Michigan.
They say they found Hardel's truck about four miles away at a rest stop.
Warner returns to court next week for a preliminary hearing.
One year after a deadly shooting rampage in Marathon County, the community and businesses honored the four lives lost in different ways.
