Obey Civic Resource Center to be dedicated Sept. 3
WAUSAU (WAOW) -- A new resource center for students and the public will be dedicated September 3 in Wausau.
The David R. Obey Civic Resource Center is named for former Congressman Dave Obey. The Wausau Democrat served the 7th Congressional District for more than 40 years before retiring in 2011.
The resource center is housed in the Center for Civic Engagement on the University of Marathon County campus.
It will be run under the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service. University leaders say students and the public will be able to access more than two-million pages of congressional notes from Obey's time in the legislature. Those items have been donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society.
University leaders tell Newsline 9, the main purpose of the center is to encourage young leaders to get involved in civic life.
The grand opening for the David R. Obey Center for Civic Engagement is Sept. 3 on the UWMC campus at 625 Stewart Ave. in Wausau. The event starts with a reception at 4:30 p.m.
