New owners of Cedar Creek Mall and convention center in Rothschild announced
ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) -
We have new details about what's planned for the Cedar Creek Mall in Rothschild. The mall and Patriot Center's new owners were announced Tuesday, along with more information about future plans.
Milwaukee's Midland Management Firm will take over the mall and the renovations. The convention center will now go by a new name, the Central Wisconsin Convention and Expo Center, and it will be owned by a local businessman.
The mall faced foreclosure last year, and the former owners owed more than $15 million. The Wausau Convention and Visitor's Bureau was operating the facilities until the new owners took over.
Dale Elliott, owner of Dale's Weston Lanes in Weston will be taking over the new convention center. He says there's work to be done, but he's ready for the challenge.
"It's just a matter now of really hitting the floor running,” said Elliott. “The building has some obvious flaws that we're going to try to work on over a period of time, but it's nothing that's going to cause us any down time."
The executive director of the Visitor's Bureau says the new ownership will make the mall and center a destination spot once again.
"We're going to bring a lot more conventions which this building was intended for,” said Richard Barrett, the executive director. “But you think of it if all these storefronts get full again, think of how many jobs it's going to bring and how many attractions and people spending the tourism dollars into our area."
The cost of the mall's renovations are around $6 million over the course of a few years. Owners say construction is set to begin in spring of next year and last about four months.
Owners are keeping tight-lipped about any particular stores we could see in Rothschild. They say they have had some calls of interest, but it's too early to determine what stores could be coming to the center.
