Historic valuables salvaged in Wood County church fire

RUDOLPH (WAOW) -- Thanks to the quick thinking of a few firefighters, a small community has salvaged some historic items after a church fire.

The Moravian Church in Rudolph went up in flames Tuesday morning.

Rudolph firefighters were able to rescue some of the church's valuables including one record book that members say goes back to the 1800's and is written in Norwegian.

Another salvaged book documents the names of the church's members, its baptisms and its marriages.

"We got some file cabinets out for them and there's a few other things from the altar that got asked about that we were able to find, clean off and bring back out for them," said Capt. Jeff Stroik of the Rudolph Fire Department. "We got thanked many times for it."

Church members say the fire started in the attic of the building.

They believe the cause could have been electrical or the result of lightning.
