Area police department remembers K-9

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The Wausau Police Department said an unexpected 'goodbye' to a beloved friend and valued teammate Wednesday.

K-9 Foster passed away Wednesday evening after 9 years of service. The German Shepherd came to the Wausau Police Department in 2005 as a dual purpose K-9. This means Foster specialized in both sniffing out drugs and going on patrols.

Officer David Landretti was Foster's handler since the very beginning. "We spent 24/7 together. That's more time than I spent with my wife," Landretti joked.

Together, the duo exposed thousands of pounds of illegal substances, found people in hiding and traveled the United States.

Those adventures will forever remain memories of Landretti.

The officer recalled he noticed Foster was ill Wednesday, "He wasn't eating."

Just one day prior to his death, Foster helped find drugs in a traffic stop.

Captain Ben Bliven also recognized Foster's special talents.

"Foster's going to be difficult to replace. Just like we have officers that retire who are difficult to replace, our K-9's are no different," Capt. Bliven said.

Whether Foster was in the office or at home, he was loved by everyone.

Foster was 13 years old.
