Enterovirus D-68 confirmed in Wisconsin

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- A child in Door County tested positive for Enterovirus D-68.

Marshfield Clinic doctors say there are Marathon County cases pending, but there are no confirmed cases in Central Wisconsin right now.

The Marathon County Health Department officials say they're waiting to hear back from the Centers for Disease Control regarding several cases.

Although the virus has not been confirmed in Marathon County, health care officials say it's coming and people need to take necessary precautions.

"The word that's going out to parents is if your child has cold symptoms and begins to have trouble breathing, you need to seek medical care, " explained Ruth Marx of the Marathon County Health Department. "It doesn't really matter what they're infected with."

Symptoms for the respiratory virus often resemble those of a common cold.

Health care workers say the best way to prevent the spread of this virus is to practice good hygiene and keep sick children home from school.
