Trailmates Snowmobile Club celebrates 25th grass meet

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- The Trailmates Snowmobile Club's grass races started 25 years ago with about five hundred people.

Over the years, the event gained popularity.

Randy Thurs, the club's president, estimates nearly 8,000 people showed up on Saturday.

Over one-hundred racers participated in this years meet. Some raced for the adrenalin rush, others raced for competition.

Racers say sledding requires a lot of skill.

"You really have to have everything put together right and you have to drive right," explained racer Randy Bernstien.

Many of the snowmobiles exceed 100 miles-per-hour. Thurs says one sled reached 127 miles-per-hour.

According to racers, speed is more exciting than it is scary.

"Going fast and winning," said racer Jade Gilland, "it's the best feeling you'll ever feel in your life."

The trailmates snowmobile grass meet also features a small-truck pull and a 40 acre swap yard.

Thurs says some visitors say it is the best swap in the Midwest.

The trailmates snowmobile group hosts this event every fall.

Organizers say this is the largest grass drag event in Wisconsin.
