Police arrest suspect in Berlin double murder

BERLIN (WKOW) -- Late Tuesday night, the Berlin Police Department announced it has arrested Nicholas Tuinstra in a weekend double murder.

Police Chief Dennis Plantz says Tuinstra has been booked into the Green County Jail on two counts of first degree homicide in the deaths of Melissa Tuinstra and Justin Daniels.

The crime resulted in an Amber Alert for Tuinstra's 8-year-old daughter who was found safe Sunday with relatives in a nearby community.

Nicholas Tuinstra was originally brought in for questioning as a person of interest in the murders. He was later released, but still labeled as a person of interest.

Chief Plantz plans to release more information on the arrest at a news conference Wednesday morning.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, police said autopsy reports on Melissa Tuinstra and Justin Daniels confirmed they died of multiple gunshot wounds and due to the placement of those wounds, officers are still investigating the case as a double homicide. Both were 28.

The Berlin Police Department is still asking anyone with firsthand knowledge and information about this case to call 920-361-2121.
