Volunteers package thousands of meals for children

MINOCQUA (WAOW) -- Hundreds of people gathered at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua Saturday to fill a semi-trailer with food for children in need.

Every year, the Minocqua "Food For Kidz" Committee gives the public an opportunity to help children around the world.

This year's goal was 150,000 meals in four hours. The volunteers did it.

People from all ages came together to chat, laugh and help people around the world.

"It seems nice because you're helping other people who need it," said Casey Van Hefty of Minocqua.

Volunteers worked as a team to bag as many meals as quickly as possible. Some people poured ingredients while others sealed bags and placed them into boxes.

Bags were filled with soy, rice, dried vegetables, vitamins and minerals.

This year's meals will be shipped to western Africa to feed children in countries where ebola is wide-spread.

The meals will be stored at the "Food For Kidz" headquarters in Minnesota. When one-million meals are packaged, the food will be sent to Africa.
