Canadian company intends to buy Biron paper mill

A Canada-based company announced an agreement to purchase the Biron paper mill in Wood County, according to its website.

Along with the Wisconsin mill owned by NewPage, Catalyst Paper Corporation says it plans to buy the Rumford pulp and paper mill in Maine.

The purchase for both NewPage mills is $74 million.

“With this Transaction, Catalyst will be better able to serve new and existing customers through operational synergies and a more diversified and higher value suite of products,” said Joe Nemeth, Catalyst President and CEO.

There's no word right now on how the purchase might impact the mill in central Wisconsin.

According to the NewPage website, the Biron mill employs about 400 people.

Catalyst owns three mills in Canada.

This deal is still subject to approval.  Click here to read the statement on the company's website.
