Prime minister urges investigation of deaths following sterilization surgeries

India's prime minister is calling for a thorough investigation into the deaths of eight women. They had undergone sterilization surgeries as part of a free program run by the government with the goal of curbing India's population growth.

A total of 83 women had the operations Saturday in a hospital in central India. They were all poor villagers under the age of 32. Each of them received a payment of about $10 to take part in the program.

They were sent home Saturday evening -- but more than two dozen were later rushed in ambulances to private hospitals after becoming ill. By today, eight had died, and 20 others were in critical condition.

A health official says the deaths were apparently from blood poisoning or from shock that occurs when a person has lost too much blood.

The state's chief medical officer isn't commenting on what might have gone wrong until autopsies are conducted on the victims.
