Grief, rage at 36-year sentence for ferry captain

Relatives of the more-than 300 people who died in the sinking of a South Korean ferry earlier this year are denouncing the 36-year prison sentence imposed today on the ferry's captain. They say it's too lenient.

The captain was convicted on charges of negligence and abandoning passengers during the sinking. But he was acquitted of a homicide charge, which could have carried a death sentence.

The verdict came on the same day officials called off searches for the final nine victims.

In addition to the captain, 14 other crew members were sentenced today. The ship's chief engineer was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The 13 others got sentences of between five and 20 years.

The court said the engineer was convicted of homicide because he abandoned two injured colleagues, escaped the ferry and failed to tell rescuers about them.

A lawyer for the relatives says some of them voiced their anger in court, with one relative shouting, "Do you know how many children are dead?" Most of the victims were high school students.
