Liberia urges UN not to reduce peacekeeping force

Posted:

Liberia's U.N. envoy is urging the United Nations not to reduce its peacekeeping force in the country, warning that the Ebola epidemic threatens the West African nation's peace, security and social cohesion.

Ambassador Marjon Kamara told the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday that a strong international presence in the country is "a critical stabilizing factor in a situation where the social, political and economic environments are fluid and delicate."

In September 2012, the council decided to decrease the U.N. peacekeeping force's military strength from about 7,950 to 3,750 by July 2015. But after the Ebola outbreak, the council delayed the reduction and extended the peacekeeping mission until Dec. 31.

Kamara appealed to the council to extend the mandate for a year and put off consideration of any cuts.
