Prominent Egyptian human rights lawyer arrested

Posted:

Egyptian police in the coastal city of Alexandria have arrested a prominent human rights lawyer and activist who was recently released from prison, her lawyer says.

Lawyer Ahmed Mamdouh says that Mahienour el-Masry was arrested with four others. He says the police have not told her why she was arrested. She was arrested soon after a nearby protest, he says, and it is not clear if she took part.

El-Masry was released from prison in September after a court accepted her appeal against a six-month prison sentence for violating a draconian law that bans protests without prior government approval.

Last month she received the Ludovic Trarieux Human Rights Award in Florence, an award she won while in prison.
