Public transport to say: 'Falklands are Argentine'

Posted:

Argentina's Congress has ruled that all public transportation must display a sign saying:  "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falklands are Argentine").

Argentina lost a brief, bloody 1982 war with Britain over the South Atlantic archipelago and still claims the islands.

The measure was approved by the lower house of Congress late Wednesday after getting approval from the Senate. It applies to all forms of public transportation whether rail, air, land or sea.

President Cristina Fernandez's government has often raised the issue of sovereignty over the islands known in Spanish as "Las Malvinas."

Argentina claims Britain has illegally occupied the islands since 1833. Britain disputes the claim and says Argentina is ignoring the wishes of the island's 3,000 residents who have expressed a desire to remain British.
