Students collect five tons of food for local pantries

SCHOFIELD (WAOW) -- Eight years ago, Peyton Medick came up with the idea of "Peyton's Promise." It's an organization that collects food for pantries around central Wisconsin.

That tradition continues but this time, with a competitive twist.

Dozens of students from the Rothschild, Schofield and Weston gathered at the Covenant Community Presbyterian Church in Schofield Wednesday. They sorted more than five tons of food. Most of the food was collected by area schools.

"We have seven schools participating in this in the Everest District and they all collected food to see who could collect the most," explained Medick.

This is the first year students turned the food-drive into a competition. Medick says the competition encouraged students to collect more food items.

The school with the most donated food will get a trophy.

The food collected goes to support local food pantries.
