Athlete of the Week: James Gollon

On Monday night, Pacelli basketball star James Gollon broke a school record that had been in place for 50 years. The senior poured in 47 points in a home loss to Stratford.

After his previous three seasons of varsity hoops were cut short due to injuries, our Athlete of the Week has put in the work to end his Cardinals career with a bang.

It's been a long time coming, and now Gollon says he feels as healthy as he ever has. Following an offseason of skill development with his older brother, Jakob Gollon, who played Division I hoops at Mercer, James has stepped into a major role for the Cardinals.

"I want to be like that. I want to follow in his footsteps and continue the legacy," said Gollon of his older brother. "This year I'm happy to actually be able to lead these guys to hopefully another conference title."

Gollon is a scoring threat from anywhere on the floor, and it's no surprise that the court is where he feels the most comfortable.

"It allows me to kind of express myself," said Gollon. "It's just kind of an outlet I guess, that I resort to. I just kind of block everything out and get out there and get in my zone."

On Monday, the senior was in a zone that no other player in Pacelli history has experienced, putting up a school record 47 points. However, the incredible performance came in defeat.

"Of course there's a sense of achievement but I didn't really think about the points as much as I thought about the loss," said Gollon. "I would much rather take a win with 15 points over a loss with as many as I had."

As a result of his junior year being limited by injury, Gollon's talent has flown under the Division I college recruiting radar, but that should change over the course of this season. With his mentality, that 47 point showing might not even be the best we'll see from him this year.

"I'd say that each day is a chance to get better and that's what I try to do."
