Iraq officials say Kirkuk car bomb kills 15

Authorities in Iraq say a car bomb attack near a cafe has killed 15 people in the country's north.

The attack happened Thursday night when a car bomb went off near a cafe in city of Kirkuk, said deputy chief of Kirkuk police, Maj. Gen. Torhan Abdul-Rahman Youssef.

The blast took place in a Kurdish district in the oil-rich city, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

A medic in a nearby hospital confirmed the causalities. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Iraq is facing its worst crisis since the 2011 withdrawal of U.S. troops, as the Islamic State group is in control of about a third of the country.
