Africa in spotlight at meeting of 122 ICC members

Posted:

The 122 states that are members of the International Criminal Court have opened their annual meeting with a spotlight on Africa following last week's collapse of the case against Kenya's president and accusations that the war crimes tribunal is racist in indicting only Africans.

Sidiki Kaba, the new president of the Assembly of States Parties, is calling for reconciliation with all regions, especially Africa where he says "there is a perception of double standard in the administration of international justice."

He said in his inaugural speech Monday that members of the ICC must change the negative perception in the eyes of the African people that the court is against Africa, and that it is selective, partial or discriminatory.

Kaba says that "Africa cannot continue to be the only one before the ICC."
