UN: Tight timeframe to restore stability in CAR

Posted:

The United Nations peacekeeping chief says the time frame to restore stability and hold elections in Central Africa Republic is extremely tight and challenging because the security situation remains highly volatile and government presence is weak, if not completely absent.

Herve Ladsous told the Security Council Tuesday that the transitional government is trying to hold elections by August 2015 but just France, the European Union and the U.N. Development Program have pledged money to support the vote.

The Security Council in April approved a 12,000-strong peacekeeping force, but full deployment often takes several months. Ladsous said the U.N. mission there has reached 80 percent of full troop deployment.

Unprecedented violence between Christians and Muslims has ripped the country apart and killed some 5,000 people, with about 1 million displaced.
