26 fishermen missing after Nicaraguan shipwreck

Posted:

Nicaraguan authorities say they are searching for 26 fishermen missing since their ship capsized in the Caribbean three days ago.

Navy officials said the lobster boat, MN Wayward Wind, turned over in a giant wave with 50 people aboard 35 nautical miles (65 kilometers) southeast of Puerto Cabezas. Some used canoes from the boat to stay afloat, while others were rescued by a sailboat, the Navy said Friday.

The boat was on a 15-day trip when it was hit by the wave on Tuesday.

The experience of the crew leaves authorities hopeful that the rest will be rescued alive, said Navy Rear Adm. Marvin Corrales.
