Romanian Parliament approves a new Cabinet

Posted:

Parliament has approved a reshuffling of Romania's Cabinet.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who lost last month's presidential  runoff election, proposed changing seven ministers -- including the economy, finance, energy, education and communications portfolios -- and Parliament's approval that by a 377-134 vote on Monday.

The Cabinet is headed by Ponta's Social Democratic Party and includes two smaller parties.

Klaus Iohannis, the former mayor of Sibiu city, won the Nov. 16 presidential runoff, and he will take office on Sunday, when President Traian Basescu steps down after the maximum 10 years in office.

In Romania, prime ministers lead parliament and are in charge of budgets and the nation's economy. Presidents control foreign policy and appoint prosecutors and spy chiefs.
