UN to vote on extending cross-border aid delivery to Syria

Posted:

The U.N. Security Council has scheduled a vote Wednesday on a resolution that would extend the cross-border delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid to Syrians in rebel-held areas, without government approval.

The draft resolution, sponsored by Australia, Jordan and Luxembourg, calls it a "devastating humanitarian situation," with 12.2 million Syrians needing urgent assistance, including medical aid.

The resolution would extend the authorization for U.N. agencies and aid organizations that assist them to deliver humanitarian assistance until Jan. 10, 2016. They'll continue working without approval from President Bashar Assad's government.

Aid will be delivered across conflict lines between government and rebel forces, and through four border crossings -- two in Turkey, one in Iraq and one in Jordan.
