CENTRAL WISCONSIN (WAOW) -- Expect more traffic on the roads and in the air this holiday season.
According to the AAA holiday travel forecast, 98.6 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles this holiday season. AAA defines the holiday season as Dec. 23 to Jan. 4.
In Wisconsin, 1.9 million people are expected to travel. Of those travelers, 90 percent are expected to drive.
"There's going to be a lot of people on the roads, especially if you're going to go through a metropolitan area, expect to run in to some congestion," said Nick Jarmusz, the director of public affairs for AAA.
According to the forecast, the increased number of travelers is, in part, due to lower gas prices. The national average is almost 70 cents lower than it was this time last year. Airfare prices have also decreased 7 percent.
"People feel like they have a little more disposable income. They're feeling more confident about the direction of the economy. That's giving them the financial security necessary to make a trip like this," said Jarmusz.
