SKorea court orders dissolution of leftist party

South Korea's constitutional court has ordered the dissolution of a small leftist political party accused of pro-North Korea policies.

The Justice Ministry had petitioned the court to disband the Unified Progressive Party last year. Key party members had earlier been arrested for allegedly plotting a pro-Pyongyang rebellion to overthrow the South Korean government in the event of a war on the Korean Peninsula.

After more than a year of deliberation, the court ruled Friday in favor of the petition in a nationally televised verdict.

It is the first time the court has ordered the breakup of a political party since the court's foundation in 1988.

The decision is expected to deepen the long-running rift between the country's right and left.
