Athlete of the Week: Siri Zeinert, Wittenberg-Birnamwood

WITTENBERG (WAOW) -- Tuesday night, Christmas came early for the Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls basketball team.

The Lady Chargers picked up their eighth straight win to start the season. And, they've done it while battling through injury. After top-returning scorer Micah Nier was sidelined with a torn meniscus, junior Siri Zeinert was asked to step up.

"I felt the need to step up and help the team out," she said. "I wanted to show them what I can do."

Averaging 13 points, five rebounds and four assists per game, Zeinert has led the team to an 8-0 record, including a win over Division 1 Wausau West on Tuesday.

"Siri's really developed a good sense of leadership," Witt-Birn head coach Mike Balliett said. "I think with the loss of Micah she's been forced to step up.

"She's a more vocal leader this year," he continued. "She's been with us since she was a freshman so she has a lot of experience."

And what makes Zeinert so valuable is the fact that she can do it all. She leads the team in scoring, assists and is second in rebounding.

"I like the assists the best," she said. "Obviously scoring is always fun, but I always look for other people. I just do what I can to get my teammates involved."

"Her defense has really picked up as well," Balliett added. "She's always been a great ball-handler. She's got a huge role. She's our coach on the floor."

With Zeinert's emergence and Nier on her way back, it looks like an 8-0 start may indeed just be the beginning for the Chargers.

"I don't want to start saying we're going to do this or that," Balliett said. "But, when we get Micah back, we can make some noise in the playoffs, I believe."
