UN to vote Tuesday on resolution to end Israel's occupation

Posted:

The U.N. Security Council is calling for a vote Tuesday evening on a Palestinian-backed resolution ordering an end to Israel's occupation within three years, a move vehemently opposed by Israel and the United States.

Jordan's U.N. Ambassador Dina Kawar, the Arab representative on the Security Council, told reporters after a closed-door meeting Tuesday that the 22 Arab ambassadors wanted an immediate vote on the latest draft resolution.

The Security Council is almost certain to reject a resolution with a timetable to end Israel's occupation. Even if the resolution musters the minimum nine required "yes" votes, the United States, Israel's closest ally which insists on a negotiated peace agreement, is certain to veto it if necessary.
