Backers: Cuban artist freed after protest arrest

Backers of Cuban artist Tania Bruguera say she has been released from detention on charges of disturbing public order for organizing a protest performance to set up an open microphone for citizens to air their political views.

Bruguera's supporters said in an emailed statement that she was freed Wednesday afternoon and would speak to the press later in the day. They said her cell phone and passport had been confiscated.

Dissidents said Cuban officials detained dozens of members of the political opposition Tuesday, hours ahead of a performance seen as a test of tolerance for dissent. Most were released within a day but the crackdown was condemned by the U.S., which declared this month that it was moving toward full diplomatic relations with Cuba.
